The first selection of reading mainly deals with the form and delivery of messages, and how it relates to different systems. Typography helps to translate words and sentences into more meaningful messages. For it to "work", it must appear naturally, or in a way that catches the correct audience's attention.
Because typography is such a relational system, the form and content must work with each other in order to display an effective message. Not only does the form and function come into play when making typographical decisions, but the connotation and denotation of the message must be dealt with in a way that positively impacts the overall message. The initiator of the design must also consider the audience in which the message is meant for, or the effectiveness of the message may falter. All these things need to come together in order for the typography to "work."
